7 things to bring to WDW for your baby.

I am a huge fan of WDWInfo, and found these 7 great things to bring when you have a baby at Disney on their site (wdwinfo.com). When our family brings our son down for his first trip in April, I'm sure we will have all of these in tow! I have left the links to their site in tact, as well as their recommended affiliate companies. Read and enjoy!

#1 – A Good Lightweight and/or  Easily Collapsible Stroller

I won’t spend too much time on this since it tends to be discussed often, but in a nutshell when bringing a stroller to Disney World, you want one that has most if not all of these qualities: easily collapsible, lightweight, easily maneuverable, and has a manageable footprint/size. Many people also choose to rent a stroller from a company like Orlando Stroller Rentals. Other people prefer to have some familiarity with the stroller they use and so choose to bring one from home. I personally do not recommend renting a stroller from Disney. For the price of a Disney stroller rental for 4 days you can buy a stroller in Disney’s gift shops.

You can purchase this or a similar stroller at the gift shops in Disney Parks. Found this one at the gift shop at the Transportation and Ticket Center gift shop.

#2 – A Good Baby Carrier/Wrap

Something not discussed as often as what stroller to bring is the choice to bring along a good carrier for your baby. Bringing a baby carrier makes traveling through the airport and waiting in lines at the park much more comfortable. It frees both hands for carrying and gives your arms a rest when without your stroller.

When I traveled to Disney, I brought along three different carriers because I prefer carrying over putting my baby in the stroller. I liked the added bonus of bringing along the Baby Bjorn so that my baby could face forward on rides and sit easily in my lap. But since facing forward can be overstimulating for a baby, I was careful not to leave him facing out for long. For longer periods of time I found a soft wrap or an ergonomic carrier like the ErgobabyErgobaby 360, or this one by Evenflo more comfortable for this reason. Plus, both my husband and I could wear it so we took turns with the baby so neither of us would get tired. If you don’t own a carrier you might consider buying one. Some Orlando area stroller rental companies even rent out baby carriers. They can be quite the backsaver and provide a way for baby to feel safe and close to you while experiencing new places and exciting rides.

The Peoplemover was one of our baby’s favorite places to take a bottle and fall asleep.

#3 – Stroller Rain Cover/Extra Poncho

Whether you choose to bring your own stroller or rent one,  you will want to bring along a rain cover for your stroller. I have heard many a story of people who forget to bring one along or go on a ride and come out to find their stroller and everything in it soaked. Because the weather can be unpredictable and rain storms are frequent in Orlando, you will want to invest in a rain cover. If you are renting, most stroller rental companies will also rent or include a rain cover for your stroller. If you bring a stroller from home, you can buy a rain cover fitted for your stroller or buy a universal one that fits most strollers. In a pinch, you can always use some clothes pins and an extra poncho if needed, but I enjoyed having one fitted to my stroller as it assured me our stuff and our baby would stay dry.

#4 Secure-a-Toy Straps

These Secure-a-toy Straps are one of those “never knew I needed it til I got it” kind of things. These make sure you can secure anything with a loop or opening to your baby stroller or carrier. It ensures that toys or pacifiers or even blankets (if you use a loop tag) don’t fall to the ground. This is great when you are out and about in the Disney Parks and is also great for ensuring you don’t loose that precious luvy that can’t be replaced.

The earmuffs, secure-a-toy and muslin blanket came in handy on our flight to Orlando!

#5 – Baby Sound Canceling Earmuffs

These earmuffs are at the top of my “buy for everyone who has a new baby list” let alone my must haves for Disney list. This came in handy so many times on our trip! Since it muffles sound, it helped calm our baby when there were loud noises on rides and during fireworks. It also allowed him to sleep better in an otherwise noisy and busy environment. We especially loved it on the plane- he slept most of the plane ride there and it helped protect his ears!

#6 – Muslin Blankets

There is a reason these muslin blankets are so popular. They are of course great as blankets, especially when your baby is still is the swaddling stage but beyond that because they are lightweight and take up little space they are a must-have to bring along when traveling to Disney. They are very versatile and can double as nursing cover, towel, burp cloth, and stroller/car seat cover. Because they are lightweight, they are perfect for the warm weather but also great to cover your little one indoors in the cold AC.

#7 – Baby Mickey Ears!

Last but not least is the essential Mickey Ear Hat for baby! This was the cutest thing ever and actually pretty reasonably priced. We chose to buy our ears during our visit to Disney Springs where we found them at the World of Disney store but you should be able to find them in most of the Disney Parks as well. If you are having trouble finding it, you can check Disney’s new merchandise app, Shop Disney Parks. Just type in ‘Mickey Ear Hat’ in the search bar and it will tell you exactly where you can buy the ears in the park!

So, those were my top 7 must-haves for visiting Disney with a baby. Of course if you are the type who likes to be ultra prepared and are a chronic overpacker like me -especially when it comes to traveling with baby- here are a few other honorable mentions you might consider bringing along as well:

Handheld Feeders

These are great so baby can feed himself while you enjoy delightful Disney food! Just strap one on to the highchair or stroller with a Secure-A-Toy and you’re good to go!

Shade Covers for stroller

If you have a smaller canopy you might consider one of these shade covers or if you want even more protection, these are also great for keeping the sun out and providing a shaded stroller for sleeping.

Mickey Teether

This terry cloth Mickey teether was so helpful on our trip since our little guy was teething. As an added bonus, since it takes ice, we could just go into any quick service location, ask for a free cup of ice, pop some in and he was good to go! I was also helpful for keeping him cool.

Stroller Fan

Although Disney does sell stroller fans, you might consider purchasing your own stroller fan to save a bit of money. My little guy loved his – not only was it great for keeping him cool, it was pretty fun for him to watch – he played with his the whole time!

Editorial: My favorite attraction in Walt Disney World, and why.

With as many wonderful queues and stories in Walt Disney World, it isn't hard to see why people would choose favorite attractions, such as the Splash/Thunder/Space Mountain, Toy Story Midway Mania, the Tower of Terror, or a number of other, newer attractions. Had my experiences as a child Disney fanatic gone differently, I would probably feel the same.

Unfortunately, or fortunately (in my case), an event happened in the Magic Kingdom in my pre teen years that would shape the attraction that I would forever call my own, and that would call to me every trip to the present.

[caption id="attachment_8" align="aligncenter" width="600"]Let's do this! Let's do this![/caption]

Let's go back in time to the early 90's, when I first entered the glorious age of meeting the dreaded "ride height requirement". My family lived in South Florida, so weekend trips to the house of mouse were commonplace. I remember the day my parents told me I was able to ride big boy rides! A Star Wars and Star Trek nerd from birth, I was always attracted to the mere ambiance of Tomorrowland, so it would come as no surprise that Space Mountain would be my first choice of attraction to ride for the first time.

[caption id="attachment_44" align="aligncenter" width="600"]space-mountain-00 The greatest challenge of my big boy trip.[/caption]

So, the first day of our trip, we head straight for the fabled mountain at rope drop (park opening for the uninitiated). As we came upon the entrance to the attraction, I began to have a pit well up in my stomach. "Is this really the best Idea? Maybe we can just go back on Peter Pan," I thought to myself. When I came back from that introspective moment, however, it was too late -- I was already in the tunnel.

[caption id="attachment_45" align="aligncenter" width="600"] The point of no return.[/caption]

As you can see from the image above, there is a steady stream of people, and this is doubly so at park opening. There would be no convincing my parents to leave the line when there was no wait for the ride, short of wetting myself of course, and they always made sure we used the bathroom before leaving the hotel, so there was nothing to do but meet the fate I had begged for just a short time ago.

[caption id="attachment_39" align="aligncenter" width="600"] What I believed would occur on the final ride of my life.[/caption]

Upon getting in my seat and having the lap bar pushed down, I said my prayers and went for the ride of my life! It was, however, not that fake movie ride that you see in theaters, where "it wasn't that bad, let's do that again!" I believe everyone there said I exited the ride looking like this:

My frozen exit ramp face.

Fearing I would need therapy, my parents took me on what I would mistake as space mountain for what could be a few years:

[caption id="attachment_41" align="aligncenter" width="432"]My security blanket for the next 5 years. My security blanket for the next 5 years.[/caption]

Although I have grown to love thrilling attractions (all the mountains, everest, etc.), tTo this day, I still get feelings of nostalgia and safety from that attraction, and the knowledge that, instead of anything surprising, I will get beautiful lights and unique views of this world of tomorrow.

[caption id="attachment_42" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Gorgeous, no?[/caption]

I hope you enjoyed my little editorial! If you did let me know, and I will add more "origin stories" to the blog!

New enhancements to the Disney Dining Plan aim to add more flexibility

From WDWMagic:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Beginning May 31 2015, Disney has introduced a number of enhancements to the Disney Dining Plan with the aim of increasing the flexibility and usability of the popular inclusive meal plan.

Here is a run-down of the changes and how you can use them.

Snacks: The snack entitlement has been updated to now include:

  • All items that are marked on the menu as snack eligible, including those that cost more than $5.

  • All single serve non-alcoholic beverages not served in a souvenir container.

  • All ice cream novelties.

  • All hand-scooped ice cream not served in a souvenir container.

  • All quick service menu side dishes.

  • Fresh popped popcorn (pre-bagged popcorn is not available as a snack item).

  • At breakfast, the following are considered snacks:

  • Cereal with milk (including Create Your Own)

  • French toast sticks

  • Oatmeal or quinoa (including Create Your Own)

  • Grits

  • Side of bacon

  • Side of sausage

  • Side of eggs

  • Side of potatoes

  • Biscuits and gravy

  • Hard-boiled eggs

  • Table Service Restaurants

There is no longer a restriction on the number of entitlements that can be used at a meal. Eg. A group of 2 guests on the Disney Dining Plan could use 1 additional entitlement for a guest in that party - making a total of 3 entitlements used for the group of 3 diners.

If using the Deluxe, Premium and Platinum Plans, child meal entitlements can be used to choose adult entrees.

At some locations, a dessert may be substituted for a side salad, soup or fruit plate if available.
Quick Service Restaurants

A dessert or beverage from the Quick Service Meal entitlement can be substituted for any snack item on the menu within the same order.

A Quick Service Meal can be substituted for 3 snack eligible items within the same order.

At Quick Service locations, child meal entitlements can be used for an adult meal.

Should you use a Disney Travel Agent?

Until I spent countless hours researching everything there is to know about Disney World, I didn't realize how a travel agent specializing in Disney travel could help me out. WDW Prep School states great reasons, listed here! (My favorite? The services are all FREE!)

Knowledge

This seems obvious, right? But when it comes to Disney World (the place that requires more research than any other destination), it can be a huge time and stress savings to rely on an expert to help advise you on your trip plans.

Free to you

It doesn't cost you any extra to book through an agent vs. booking straight through Disney. Disney pays commission to the agency that books you but at no cost to you.

Saves you money

Not only does it not cost you anything to use an agent, it can actually save you money because agents are aware of all new discount codes and will apply them to your reservation as they become available.

Dining, FastPass+ and other reservations booked for you

Many of the super hard-to-get dining reservations require being online or on the phone at the crack of dawn 180 days in advance of your trip. Disney travel agents will make these reservations for you, allowing you to relax and sleep in. They will also make all of your FastPass+ reservations for your trip and special bookings such as Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique as well.

In short, it saves so much time and effort. Let me know if I can help make your next vacation even more magical! Email, comment, or call to talk about it.
